How to detect a hidden cam

hidden cams

Pinhole cameras have been getting smaller and easier to hide for many years. They have finally reached the point where the pinhole lens is so tiny, it's virtually undetectable. The most effective way to locate a hidden cam is to look for the recording device, or in the case of wireless hidden cams, you can also look for the receiver. In order to actually record the video, the owner of the spy cam would have had to connect it to their DVR, VCR, DVD recorder, camcorder, or handheld video recorder (such as a mp3 or mp4 player with video recording capability). Look in back of entertainment centers for the devices, usually they come with short cables and the convenient/logical place to hide them is in back of their electronics. Any device with a short, roughly 4-5" antenna coming out of it is suspect. If possible, you can turn on the TV and flip through the input channels to see if there's anything suspicious showing. In addition, check the front of the VCR, DVD recorder, or any other electronic devices to see if they're displaying "recording" on the front. Camcorders will usually have a red light indicating that it's recording, but this is a feature that can easily be turned off, so you may have to actually flip out the LCD display on it to know for sure.

The common devices that can be disguised to look like hidden cams are books that are out of place, teddy bears (check the back to see if there's an opening or zipper), empty cans, flood lights, fire detectors, alarm clocks, and even boomboxes. Because there are so many different devices on the market that can hide a cam, you might actually just want to sign on ebay and do a search for spy cams. You can use the pictures of the products displayed to give you some idea what's readily available. There are also handheld detectors for spy cams which scan 1.2G and 2.4G frequencies, but if the camera is wired, be careful not to lull yourself into a false sense of security!

Note: You are responsible for knowing and following the law when using a hidden camera. When ordering a camera with a microphone, be aware of your state's wiretap labs. Most states do not allow you to secretly record conversations!
